Project initiation document (PID) writing

An essential component of any premises development plan (however small) for a GP practice is the completion of the project initiation document (PID). The PID demonstrates the case for change and the aims, objectives and benefits that a preferred premises solution would deliver. PCC can support practices with the completion of their PID document through training and direct support

Having a well-structured and compelling PID document can significantly increase the chances of securing commissioner support for premises development ambitions.

  • What is the problem? – this will be articulated and clearly defined, setting out symptoms, causes and needs.
  • Who is involved? – consideration of who are the key stakeholders?
  • Who are the users of the building and what are their needs?
  • What will be the impact? – this will cover the position and negative implications, the benefits and the drawbacks.
  • What is the solution? – this will set out why is the development needed, what resources are needed and how much it will cost.
  • What are the risks? – this will include setting out the risks but also consideration of the effects of the risks, their likelihood and impact and how they can be controlled / managed or mitigated.
