New to people management

This online programme is designed for newly hired managers to explore and hone their abilities. The programme provides them with the information and resources they need to effectively lead, motivate, and inspire teams and individuals. Being new to people management might feel like a difficult transition. We will demonstrate how management tools and approaches can be used in an efficient and effect manner.

This program is presented over the course of four sessions spaced over six months with a gap of four to six weeks between each session giving delegates the time to reflect on the materials covered in each session and apply the knowledge and techniques provided.

Each session includes peer support, professional facilitation, information sharing, and opportunity to share experiences. Supplemental reading is provided between sessions to allow the participants to advance their knowledge at their own pace.

Session one: Introduction into people management
The programme’s learning culture is established during this first session and presents the programme’s objectives. This session will include time for participants to start to create a bond and get to know one another while using group activities to share and discuss experiences. The main responsibilities and obligations of line managers will be discussed throughout the session, and participants will also undertake a short self-evaluation of their existing people management abilities.

Session two: Building effective teams and conducting productive meetings
Within this session we will discuss the importance of understanding teams – the different roles a colleague can play, considering their preferences and motivators. We will discuss the distinctions between facilitating and chairing meetings, and we’ll challenge participants to identify best approaches and behaviours that will lead to a productive meeting.

Session three: Performance management
In this session we will consider the development of SMART objectives and how to prepare for a productive performance management meeting. It will explore how to deliver and accept constructive feedback and provide participants the space to plan actions from the training and discuss them with peers.

Session four: Effective time management and creating positive conversations
The final session examines how participants relate to time and how they can develop a process to manage it more effectively. There will be the opportunity to recap the previous sessions and allow the participants time to reflect on how they will use the skills and knowledge they have acquired moving forward. There is also an opportunity to reassess their people management confidence levels.
